About the Role
IBM India is hiring highly motivated Research Interns to support ongoing advancements in Quantum Computing, AI, Hybrid Cloud, and Mathematical Sciences. This internship is offered through IBM Research India’s University Relations Program, which enables top students to gain real-world experience while contributing to cutting-edge research projects.
As a Research Intern – Quantum, you will collaborate with IBM scientists and engineering teams on impactful projects, working on language models, quantum algorithms, AI for quantum, and research prototypes.
Key Responsibilities
Work on active research and engineering projects within IBM Research labs.
Contribute to the development, training, and finetuning of large language models for enterprise applications.
Build research prototypes and implement solutions aligned with real-world scenarios.
Collaborate with senior researchers, mentors, and infrastructure teams to solve technical challenges.
Participate in the Summer Internship Program, gaining exposure to world-class tools, technologies, and research methodologies.
Support ongoing projects related to AI, Quantum Computing, Hybrid Cloud, and Mathematical Sciences.
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
Preferred Education
Master’s Degree (Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields).
Required Technical Skills
Strong coding skills in Java/Python, including libraries like pandas and NumPy.
Solid understanding of Data Structures, Algorithms, statistics, probability, and linear algebra.
Experience with development tools such as VS Code, Jupyter Notebooks, Git.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Specialized Subareas (One or More of the Following)
1. Qiskit Development
Experience in open-source development
Coding proficiency in Qiskit and familiarity with Rust
Good to have: basics of quantum computing, probability, and graph theory
2. AI for Quantum
Hands-on experience with large language models, agentic AI, or reinforcement learning
Understanding of machine learning workflows and data science practices
Experience deploying AI-based solutions
3. Quantum Algorithms & Engineering
Knowledge of quantum computing concepts such as QAOA
Ability to read research papers and implement solutions
Good to have: understanding of tensor networks
4. Services, Infrastructure & Reliability
Knowledge of Kubernetes, CI/CD, IaC, GitOps, Linux, and open-source contributions
Experience with security tools: IAM, RBAC, encryption, secret management
Familiarity with NodeJS / TypeScript / Python, Vector databases, or bot frameworks
